Rwanda’s gorilla forests are navigable on drier trails (though waterproofs are always advisable in Virunga). In Tanzania, the Great Wildebeest Migration pushes north towards the Mara River from July to October, providing the dramatic river-crossing spectacles for which the Serengeti is most famous. Wildlife concentrates around permanent water in the Ngorongoro Crater. Zanzibar’s southeast monsoon has finished, and the ocean is calm and crystal. July, August, and September represent the absolute peak of the season; book at least six months ahead.
January–February: Calving Season (Spectacular & Less Crowded)
The dry spell between Tanzania’s short and long rains makes January and February an excellent and significantly less crowded time to visit. The wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti’s Ndutu area (roughly late January to mid-March) produces one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on Earth: 500,000 calves born within a three-week window, attracting an extraordinary concentration of predators. March–May: Long Rains (Possible, With Caveats)
The long rains bring lush landscapes and significant discounts (30–50% off peak season rates at many lodges), but muddy tracks in Rwanda can make gorilla trekking more strenuous, and some Serengeti camps close during April. How difficult is the mountain gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park?
The gorilla trek ranges from moderate to strenuous depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight. The hike can take anywhere from one hour (if the family is close to the park boundary) to six hours of uphill forest hiking at elevations above 2,500 metres. The forest floor is uneven and often muddy. Trekkers should be in reasonable physical condition and comfortable with sustained walking on steep terrain. The RDB provides walking sticks at the trailhead, and porters are available for hire we strongly recommend hiring one, as they are also expert trackers and carry your pack at altitude while contributing directly to the local economy.
What is the gorilla trekking permit fee, and what does it include?
The Rwanda gorilla trekking permit costs USD $1,500 per person (2025 pricing). This fee is set by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and is non-negotiable and non-refundable once confirmed. It includes the RSSF (Rwanda Sustainable Safari Fee) of USD $200 per person, which goes directly to conservation programs and community support around Volcanoes National Park. The permit covers ranger escort, the pre-trek briefing, and the one-hour habituation visit with the gorilla family. It does not include transport to the trailhead, accommodation, or meals.
How many gorilla families can be visited in Volcanoes National Park?
Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda currently has 12 habituated gorilla families available for tourism visits. Each family receives a maximum of eight visitors per day. The specific family allocated to your group is determined by RDB on the morning of the trek, based on that day’s logistics, trail conditions, and family location. Our guides request preferred families where possible, but they cannot guarantee allocation in advance. All habituated families offer a high-quality encounter; the variations are in trekking distance and forest terrain, not in the quality of the gorilla experience itself.
Is the hot air balloon safari guaranteed on this itinerary?
The Serengeti hot air balloon safari is subject to weather conditions. Flights operate year-round but are cancelled when wind speed, rain, or low cloud make conditions unsafe. In the event of a cancellation, you receive a full refund or the option to rebook on a subsequent morning within your itinerary. We schedule the balloon flight on Day 9, with Days 10 and 11 providing a rescheduling window if required. Balloon slots during peak season (July–October) are booked months in advance we secure yours at the earliest possible stage in the booking process.
What visa do I need for Rwanda and Tanzania?
Both Rwanda and Tanzania offer e-visa applications online prior to travel, and both accept East Africa Tourist Visas (EAV), which allow entry into Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda on a single visa at USD $100. Tanzania’s standard single-entry tourist visa costs USD $50 for most nationalities (Americans pay USD $100). We provide full visa application guidance as part of our pre-departure documentation. Please apply at least four weeks before departure to avoid processing delays.
What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is 15 years. This regulation is set by the Rwanda Development Board and applied strictly. Children under 15 cannot participate in the gorilla trek regardless of physical fitness. For families with younger children, we recommend replacing the gorilla component with an alternative Rwanda experience (Akagera National Park’s Big Five safari is excellent for younger visitors) or designing a different Tanzania-focused itinerary. What vaccinations do I need for Rwanda and Tanzania?
Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry into Tanzania if you are arriving from a yellow fever risk country (Rwanda is designated as such; a yellow fever certificate is therefore required for this specific itinerary). We strongly recommend also being vaccinated or taking prophylaxis for malaria, typhoid, hepatitis A, and tetanus. Consult a travel medicine clinic at least six to eight weeks before departure. Rwanda is designated malaria-free in Kigali and at high altitude (including the gorilla trek zones), but Tanzania’s Serengeti and Zanzibar are malaria-endemic areas. Prophylaxis is strongly advised.
