Best Time to Go: When to Book This Safari

The 14-day Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar Beach Safari runs year-round, but each element has its own prime window:

Kilimanjaro Trekking

The two best climbing windows are January–March and June–October. Both are relatively dry on the mountain’s southern approaches. January–February offers clear summit mornings and the chance to pair your climb with the Serengeti calving season. June–October aligns with Tanzania’s dry season and peak wildlife concentrations in the Serengeti.

Serengeti Safari

June–October is peak season: dry grass concentrates animals at water sources, skies stay blue, and the northern Serengeti holds the famous Mara River crossings during July–October. January–March is the calving season in the Ndutu and Ngorongoro area: 500,000 wildebeest calves are born in six weeks, plus some of Africa’s most intense cheetah and lion action. Read the full Wildebeest Migration guide for month-by-month details.

Zanzibar Beach

The Indian Ocean off Zanzibar is swimmable all year, but June–October and January–February are the driest and clearest months. The long rains (March–May) bring afternoon downpours that can interrupt beach days, though morning swimming is usually still pleasant.

Who Is This Safari For?

This itinerary is built for physically fit travelers who want Tanzania’s three headline experiences in one trip. It works best for:

  • Adventure couples celebrating a milestone: summit, safari, sand, and zero logistics to manage
  • Solo adventurers joining a private group departure or travelling alone with a dedicated guide
  • Experienced hikers adding an African safari and beach extension after Kilimanjaro
  • Families with teenagers the beach and safari days are ideal; younger children may prefer our 12-day Family Luxury Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar which omits Kilimanjaro
  • Wildlife photographers wanting both the Serengeti’s open light and Zanzibar’s colourful reef and street scenes

Minimum fitness requirement: you should be able to hike 6–8 hours with a light daypack and some altitude gain. Prior high-altitude experience is helpful but not essential for the Machame or Rongai routes.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 14-day Serengeti, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar Beach Safari

What is included in the 14-day Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar Beach Safari?

This all-inclusive package covers all accommodation (hotel, mountain camps, safari lodge, and beach hotel), all meals as specified per day, domestic flights between Arusha, Serengeti, and Zanzibar, park and mountain fees, a professional guide team for both the climb and safari, ground transport in a private 4×4, airport transfers, and AMREF Flying Doctors emergency evacuation insurance. International flights, visa fees, alcoholic drinks, optional activities, and gratuities are not included.

Which Kilimanjaro route is best for this package?

The Machame Route is the most popular choice on this itinerary. Its southern approach through montane forest and heath offers superb scenery, and the acclimatisation profile, designed as a ‘climb high, sleep low’ strategy across the Lava Tower, delivers strong summit success rates. The Rongai Route from the north is quieter and drier, making it a suitable alternative during the April–May wet season. The Umbwe Route is the most direct and challenging, recommended only for strong trekkers who have already spent time at altitude. All three use the six-day version for this package.

How difficult is Kilimanjaro, do I need mountaineering experience?

No technical mountaineering skills are required. Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude trek, not a technical climb. The main challenge is altitude: the summit reaches 5,895 m (19,341 ft), and altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Active African Vacations guides monitor your oxygen saturation and symptoms daily. Adequate acclimatisation time is built into the six-day itinerary. A good baseline fitness level, hiking 6–8 hours comfortably, is all you need.

What wildlife will I see in the Serengeti on this safari?

The Serengeti hosts Africa’s most concentrated wildlife. On a two-day visit you have a very high chance of seeing lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, and giraffes. Spotted hyena, zebra, and impala are almost guaranteed. Depending on your travel month, you may also encounter the wildebeest migration herds. The Seronera Valley, where most guests stay on fly-in itineraries, is one of the best-documented leopard areas in Africa. Our guides know the territory intimately.

Can I extend the Serengeti portion of this trip?

Yes. The two Serengeti days in this itinerary are a strong taste, but guests who want deeper immersion often extend to four or five days. We can also add a night at the Ngorongoro Crater, considered by many the most dramatic wildlife destination in Africa, a self-contained ecosystem inside the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Contact our team and we will redesign the itinerary around your preferred length.

What is the best time for 2 weeks in Tanzania to see everything?

June through October is the safest choice for a 14-day Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, and Zanzibar itinerary. Kilimanjaro is clear, the Serengeti is dry with concentrated game, and Zanzibar’s beaches are rain-free. January through February is excellent if the calving season in the Ndutu area or crossing that window appeals to you. Avoid the long rains of April–May for Kilimanjaro unless you specifically choose the Rongai Route and accept wetter conditions.

What vaccinations do I need for Tanzania?

No vaccination is legally required to enter Tanzania, but Yellow Fever vaccination is required if you are arriving from a Yellow Fever endemic country. We strongly recommend up-to-date vaccinations for Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus, plus a course of anti-malarial medication. Consult your GP or a travel health clinic at least six weeks before departure. The Tanzania Tourism Board also maintains updated health entry requirements at tanzaniatourism.go.tz.

How much does a 14-day Serengeti, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar safari cost?

Pricing varies depending on the Kilimanjaro route, accommodation level (mid-range tented camp vs. luxury private lodge), travel dates, and group size. Private safaris naturally offer better value the larger the group. Contact our team for a personalized quote; we typically respond within 24 hours with a detailed cost breakdown, no obligation.
