Entebbe Forest Lodge

Travellers who arrive before early afternoon are invited to join our guide for an included excursion to Mabamba Swamp, a vast papyrus wetland on the northern edge of Lake Victoria and one of Africa’s most significant Important Bird Areas. We explore its narrow, reed-fringed channels on a traditional wooden canoe, an experience that is meditative and thrilling in equal measure. Mabamba is one of the most reliable places in Africa to encounter the shoebill stork, a prehistoric-looking bird of staggering improbability: four feet tall, with a bill like a Dutch clog and the unnerving habit of standing perfectly motionless for minutes at a time before lunging at its prey. Spotting one is a legitimate wildlife highlight for any seasoned naturalist.

The swamp also holds over 300 bird species, including the papyrus gonolek, the malachite kingfisher, and the African jacana walking improbably across floating vegetation. For those new to African birdlife, it is a gentle and beautiful introduction to the richness ahead. For dedicated birders, it is simply essential.

That evening, we gather for a welcome dinner and orientation, an informal but informative session in which your guide walks through the days ahead, answers questions, and sets expectations about everything from trekking difficulty to what it actually feels like to sit with a gorilla family.

We depart Entebbe this morning by chartered light aircraft, a decision that transforms the journey. Overland from Entebbe to Murchison Falls is a half-day of bumpy roads through traffic and small towns; by air, it is forty minutes of spectacular views over the green hills and braided rivers of central Uganda, arriving refreshed and ready rather than dusty and travel-worn. This choice is one of the quietly significant distinctions between a truly well-organized private safari and a standard group tour.

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest protected area, covering nearly 1,500 square miles of varied, dramatic terrain where the Albertine Rift Valley meets the northern savannahs. The Victoria Nile slices the park in half, roaring through a gorge barely seven metres wide before plunging forty-three metres in a cascade of force and spray that can be heard before it is seen. The naturalist and explorer Samuel Baker, who was the first European to see the falls in 1864, described the noise as like distant artillery. It has been producing that sound, reliably, ever since.

Nile Safari Lodge

We spend the next three nights at an intimate private camp in the heart of the park, Nile Safari Lodge, a location chosen above all for its proximity to wildlife. Small camps in remote positions mean we are in the park before the gates open each morning, watching lions on a hunt while other visitors are still having breakfast at lodges thirty minutes away. Canvas tents, lantern-lit dinners, and the sound of hippos moving through the darkness below this is safari as it was meant to be experienced.

Murchison is one of Uganda’s richest wildlife ecosystems, and mornings here reward early risers. We embarked on our journey at dawn in a private 4×4, with no other passengers and no fixed schedule, scanning the open savannahs for the park’s 144 mammal species. Rothschild’s giraffes, found nowhere else on Earth except Murchison and a handful of Kenyan sanctuaries, move in loose groups across the red-oat grass plains. Buffalo gather in enormous herds at waterholes. Elephant families dust themselves at midday. If the conditions are right, and they often are, lions are visible in the early morning, frequently including the park’s famous tree-climbing individuals, which have adopted the same puzzling habit observed in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park.

This afternoon, we board a private boat for a cruise along the Victoria Nile toward the Lake Albert Delta, a swampy, island-threaded wetland where the river loses itself in a maze of channels before draining into Lake Albert, with the forested ridges of the Democratic Republic of Congo rising beyond. The delta is one of Africa’s premier birding locations, particularly for aquatic species: African fish eagles calling from every tall tree, goliath herons standing motionless at the water’s edge, and magnificent blue turacos moving through the canopy like small jewels. With luck and if we position ourselves carefully for the moment, another shoebill stork may appear, hunting catfish in the shallows with that characteristic patient stillness.

Crocodiles line the banks in extraordinary numbers. Hippos surface, argue, submerge, and surface again. Elephants wade at the river’s edge. It is a spectacle of abundance that is genuinely difficult to process.

This morning belongs to our closest relatives. We drive to the edge of the Murchison escarpment and enter Budongo Forest Reserve, a dense, semi-deciduous tropical rainforest spread across the plateau above Lake Albert, home to one of Uganda’s largest chimpanzee populations, estimated at 600 individuals. Budongo is also where some of the earliest scientific research into wild chimpanzee behavior began, with pioneer researchers working here as early as the 1960s, alongside Jane Goodall’s concurrent work further south.

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo is a different experience from gorilla trekking and, in some ways, an even more exhilarating one. Chimpanzees are faster, noisier, and less predictable than gorillas; locating a community can involve following distant calls through the understory, tracking knuckle prints through soft earth, and then suddenly finding yourself underneath a dozen chimps swinging, hooting, feeding, and occasionally descending to inspect you with expressions of frank curiosity. The forest canopy here includes ancient mahogany trees of extraordinary size, their buttressed roots creating a cathedral architecture that dwarfs everything beneath them. Budongo also holds 360 bird species, including several endemic to this specific microhabitat that bring dedicated birders from around the world.

After lunch, we make our way to the top of Murchison Falls itself, a vantage point that most visitors miss entirely. Standing on the rim of the gorge as the entire Nile attempts to force itself through a gap narrower than a residential street is an experience of raw geological power unlike anything else in Africa. The spray reaches you before you see the falls; the noise is something you feel in your chest rather than simply hear. It is a spectacular, humbling conclusion to an already extraordinary day.

Dawn brings one more excursion on the Nile, a private morning cruise to the base of Murchison Falls itself, looking up at the cascade from below in a spectacle of churning white water and rainbow-threaded mist. This section of the river is the province of hippos in extraordinary concentrations: pods of twenty, thirty, or fifty animals resting in the shallows, occasionally with territorial males lunging at each other in displays of power that rock the boat. Our guide points out the bank where Ernest Hemingway’s small plane crashed during a 1954 visit to Uganda, a piece of literary history lodged in the wilderness.

After the cruise, we transfer to the airstrip for a scenic flight south over Uganda’s highlands. The views are stunning: terraced tea plantations, the volcanic peaks of the Rwenzori Range glittering with equatorial snow, and the deep blue expanse of Lake George. We land near Kibale National Park, in the southwest of the country, where we will spend the next two nights.

Kibale contains roughly 1,300 chimpanzees, the highest density of the species anywhere in Africa, along with twelve other primate species, including the beautiful red colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, and the grey-cheeked mangabey. We spend two dedicated sessions tracking habituated chimpanzee communities with expert local guides, and the time spent on the ground here is unhurried and conducted with small groups, which is one of the genuine differentiators of a private safari versus a group tour. There is no fixed departure time and no other group waiting for the vehicle. We remain in the presence of a community of chimps engaged in something remarkable.

Between primate encounters, an optional walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary managed by the local community and a genuine model of conservation tourism done right rewards with hornbills, kingfishers, and occasional otter sightings. An optional hike to one of the ancient crater lakes that pock this volcanic landscape offers wide-open views across the Albertine Rift from the crater rim: one of Uganda’s quiet, underrated panoramas.

Our accommodation overlooks another of these ancient craters: a setting of improbable drama, with papyrus swamp below and forest ridge above, and the calls of turacos and olive pigeons threading through each evening.

We take an early flight to Kihihi, the small airstrip that serves as the gateway to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and the name of this World Heritage Site is not, as visitors sometimes suspect, metaphorical. Bwindi is genuinely difficult terrain: a tangle of vines, fallen giants, moss-covered ravines, and fern-choked gullies that has been accumulating complexity for twenty-five thousand years, through multiple ice ages and climatic upheavals. This ancient stability is precisely why so many species found refuge here, including roughly half of all the mountain gorillas remaining in existence. Approximately 460 gorillas live within Bwindi’s boundaries, a population that has grown steadily thanks to sustained conservation efforts, even as the pressure from surrounding human communities intensifies.

The park is also home to chimpanzees, forest elephants, a number of duiker species, and 23 of Uganda’s 24 Albertine Rift endemic bird species, making it one of the most important single sites for bird conservation on the continent. Threatened species including the African green broadbill and Shelley’s crimsonwing are found here, and serious birders typically spend an extra day in Bwindi purely for the avifauna.

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

We settle into our forest lodge this evening, accommodation that sits on the very edge of the park, close enough that you sometimes hear the forest’s nocturnal sounds through your window: the bark of a bushbuck, the high-pitched calls of a tree hyrax, and the distant whoop of a chimp. Your guide briefs you on tomorrow’s trek over dinner.

The alarm sounds in the dark. Breakfast is quick and purposeful. By the time we gather at the park headquarters, the forest is lit in a grey pre-dawn light, and your breath hangs in the cool air. The briefing is calm and expert: your ranger explains which gorilla family you are tracking today, what to expect from the terrain, and how to behave in the gorillas’ presence. Then the trackers, men and women who have spent their careers reading the language of this forest, set off ahead of you into the undergrowth.

The trek to reach the gorillas varies in duration: sometimes forty minutes of steady walking, sometimes three hours of genuine scrambling through steep, wet terrain. This variability is part of what makes it real. You are not visiting animals in a managed enclosure but tracking genuinely wild creatures through genuinely wild country. When the trackers find the family and radio back to the ranger, there is a moment of gathering breath, of adjusting camera settings and composing yourself, before you push through the last wall of vegetation and step into the gorillas’ presence.

You are allowed one hour with the family. In that hour, you will see things that change how you understand the relationship between humans and the natural world. A juvenile practicing the silverback’s chest-beating display, imperfectly but with tremendous enthusiasm. A mother is nursing a day-old infant. The silverback himself is perhaps three times the weight of a large man, moving through the group with absolute authority and occasional surprising gentleness, grooming a female, and settling a dispute between two adolescents with a look rather than a gesture. Gorillas share approximately 98% of human DNA, and sitting among a habituated family, that statistic stops being abstract.

We conduct two separate treks across these two days, visiting two different habituated family groups, led by two different sets of trackers, in different sections of the forest. No two treks are alike, and the accumulated experience over both days is qualitatively different from a single encounter.

An exclusive upgrade we strongly recommend: For travelers who wish to spend significantly more time with the gorillas, we can arrange a Gorilla Habituation Experience, a full day (up to four hours) accompanying researchers as they work with a semi-habituated gorilla family still undergoing the multi-year process of acclimatization to human presence. This is available only at Bwindi and for a limited number of visitors. It is, frankly, one of the rarest wildlife experiences available anywhere on Earth.

If time allows between treks, we visit the Conservation Coffee project near Bwindi’s forest edge, a community-owned cooperative where local farmers grow, process, and roast single-origin coffee whose premium price directly funds gorilla conservation. Walking through the coffee fields with the forest behind you, picking ripe cherries and talking with the farmers, is a vivid illustration of how sustainable economic models can align local livelihoods with conservation outcomes. We also recommend the Batwa Cultural Trail, a deeply moving experience in which members of the Batwa community forest-dwelling people who lived within Bwindi for thousands of years before the park’s establishment share their traditional relationship with the forest: tracking techniques, medicinal plant knowledge, and the music and stories of a culture shaped entirely by this ancient ecosystem.

Our Uganda expedition concludes with a morning flight back to Entebbe. A private day room allows you to shower, rest, and have a final meal with your guide before the evening transfer to the airport. There will be things to talk about: a particular moment from the second gorilla trek, the clarity of the Nile at dawn, and the juvenile chimpanzee in Kibale that swung low enough to almost knock off your hat.
