Selous Game Reserve
Located in the southern part of Tanzania, Selous offers the best escape from the large tourist crowds in Tanzania’s destinations like Serengeti, Ngoro Ngoro and more.
It is one of the hidden gems in the county. The reserve is located about 219 kilometers from Dar es Salaam.
Covering a total area of 54600 square kilometers, Selous is the largest game reserve in Africa. Its vast wilderness includes grassy plains, forests, and open woodlands.
It was named after Frederick Selous Courtney who was a great Hunter and explorer. This reserve was established in 1922, and declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1982.
In 2019 responsible authorities proposed a change of identity of the northern sector of this reserve named it The Nyerere National Park. This was meant to honor the first president of Tanzania “Julius Nyerere”.
