Mount Nyiragongo
Standing at 3470m high, Nyiragongo is an active volcano in the Virunga Massif. It is one of the most picturesque spots that draw several tourists from various corners of the World.
It is located in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo towering Virunga National Park, a center for Mountain Gorilla trekking in the DR Congo.
Its hiking expeditions last for two days. On day one it takes about 6-9 hours to hike from the ground up to the top of this Volcano.
This is a fantastic answer to those who fancy breathtaking adventures in Democratic Republic of Congo. It is the largest active and the most fascinating Lava lake Volcano in the African continent.
It was opened for tourism by Virunga Park authorities in 2014. Tourists come to admire its burning lava lake with red glow. Its hiking requires a permit and it’s only provided by the Virunga foundation. This permit costs $300 USD per person.
Other than that, there are other necessary additions including the Mikeno package which costs $100 USD per person.
The hiking stick is hired at a cost of $5 USD and porters are available at a cost of $24 USD each. Porters help to carry the Mikeno package and other luggage from Kibati starting point up to the top and back. You can book for the permits through a Tour operator.
You are advised to secure first the hiking permit before applying for the Visa. A single Congo tourist entry visa costs $105 per person. It is valid for 14 days from the entry date.
